It’s always been a goal of mine to make art a priority in our homeschool, but I’ve struggled to find a curriculum that worked well for our family. I wanted an art program that would teach my students to:

  1. Study great artists
  2. Study and recognize famous pieces of art
  3. Participate in a fun variety of art projects

Oh, and I needed it to be simple to teach and not too time consuming, so that it would fit in well with our busy school schedule!

So I created my own art curriculum! The Mary Cassatt Project Masterpiece Unit Study is the first of six 6-week unit studies that I hope to have available by Summer 2018.

Project Masterpiece: Mary Cassatt includes six recommended artworks for Picture Study , one per week. I encourage you to secure printed versions of these. (We love Picture Study Portfolios from Simply Charlotte Mason and their Mary Cassatt portfolio includes all of the recommended artwork in this study!) However, I also include links to view the artwork online.

Picture Study only takes about 5-10 minutes a day and we simply incorporate it into our morning routine. Step by step instructions for Picture Study are included in the lesson plans.

A 1-2 hour weekly project is also included in the Mary Cassatt unit study. Projects include recommended books, movies, and art projects. We block out one afternoon a week to complete our project.

Project Masterpiece: Mary Cassatt is simple to teach and easy to add in your school week. But by the end of six weeks, your students will feel like they know Ms. Cassatt! They will be able to recognize and recite the name of six of her works of art and they will complete four art projects inspired by her.

Project Masterpiece is a series of 6-week unit studies that features:

Great Artists

Each 6-week unit focuses on one well-known artist from history.

Art History

You will spend time learning about the artist’s life and work with your students throughout the six weeks.

Picture Study

You will study at least six pieces of the artist’s work. Students will work towards recognizing and memorizing the titles of the work, as well as the time period that the work was created, and where the artwork is located now.

Art Projects

Students (and teachers) participate in art projects inspired by the artist. This is the fun part! So be sure to jump in and get your hands dirty. The paint and markers will wash off and even if they don’t, the memories you make with your kids will be well worth the stains! Projects are only once a week and take approximately 1-2 hours. Links to each project are included, so instructions are just a click away!
